About Ann Moore

"Operating at the changing intersections between drawing, painting, and sculpture, Ann Moore’s work is alive with self-interrogation and metaphorical play. Her pieces alternately create architectural enclosures and expansive narrative flow, challenging her viewers to establish the premises by which they may understand what they see. Her new work exhibits an elating lyricism whose repetitions and variations sing a new song".

ARTISTS' STATEMENT | My work is about what I see, how I experience life. I use corrugated paper backed with screening wire to shape each new piece. Repeated coatings of plaster and glue give strength and permanence to the constructions. As a final step, I paint the images in oil.

Recurring in my work is an engagement with two dichotomies: abstraction and story on the one hand and image and object on the other. I’m working in that part of the modernist tradition that relishes discontinuity, looking for the dynamism born of combining elements that seem to refuse combination. The reconciliation of disparate elements reveals the real richness of the world.

Working in this way, I often surprise myself by what I have made. From the surprise follows a perception that everything is suddenly richer, fuller, and more interesting.

That is what art can do - make you feel that your being in the world is quickened, that you have lived.
